Onions are the staple ingredient in Indian cooking; it is used in a variety of dishes for flavour and texture. It is also one of the widely cultivated crops in India. India holds second place in the production of onions globally. With millions of tons of onions produced in India, it meets both domestic and export requirements. In India the production of onions is concentrated in specific states due to its ideal climate conditions and efficient agricultural practices focused on onion cultivation. These states are the backbone of the Indian economy and are significantly contributing to production capacity.
1. Maharashtra
The first state on our list of largest onion producers in India is Maharashtra. Maharashtra produces almost 65 lakh tones of onions annually, contributing 35-40 per cent of the country’s total output. The state’s favourable climate, particularly in regions like Nashik and Ahmednagar, allows for year-round cultivation. Maharashtra is known for the production of both types of onions red as well as white. Maharashtra has developed a strong infrastructure for onion storage and transportation, which helps mitigate post-harvest losses and ensures a steady supply throughout the year. The key regions of the state that are widely involved in onion production are Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, and Solapur.
2. Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh has also been significantly contributing to onion production in India. The state has emerged as a key player due to its rapid growth in onion production. Madhya Pradesh has significantly contributed to India’s economy in the last two years due to its rapid growth in the agricultural sector. The state’s central location and fertile soil, particularly in regions like Ujjain, Mandsaur, and Shajapur, make it an ideal place for onion farming. The government’s focus on improving irrigation facilities and promoting high-yield onion varieties has led to rapid growth in production. The state also serves as a vital supplier of onions to neighbouring states during the lean season.
3. Karnataka
The next state on our list that is the highest producer of onions in India is Karnataka. Karnataka contributes to nearly 15 – 18 per cent of India’s total onion output. t. The northern districts of the state, particularly Dharwad, Bijapur, and Gadag, are known for large-scale onion cultivation. Karnataka’s climate is ideal for both Rabi and Kharif onion crops, allowing for significant production throughout the year. Additionally, the state’s robust irrigation infrastructure helps support consistent yields, even in areas with low rainfall. A southern state like Karnataka produces onions thrice a year and its role is significant in overall production.
4. Gujarat
Gujarat takes fourth place as the major onion-producing state in India. It contributes around 10 -12 per cent of onion production in the country. Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, especially the districts of Bhavnagar and Junagadh, is a major onion cultivator. The state’s onion farmers have adopted modern farming techniques and post-harvest management practices, which help reduce wastage and improve market availability. Gujarat’s proximity to western ports also makes it an important exporter of onions. Onion production is developed in the state due to assistance from government policies and farming techniques.
5. Rajasthan
The last state on our list of most onion producers in India is Rajasthan. It is a major producer of Kharif onion crops in India. The state research institute namely Rajasthan Agricultural Research Institute works to develop onion varieties for the state. The RARI in Jaipur develops onion varieties for the state, including high-yielding varieties, which have a long shelf life, and are suitable for dehydration and industrial uses. Though Rajasthan has an arid climate the state can overcome the challenges faced by climate through advanced farming techniques.

India’s onion production is critical not only for domestic consumption but also for export markets. While Maharashtra dominates onion production in India, contributing significantly to the nation’s output other states like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are essential for ensuring a balanced and diversified production. These states rank top due to their favourable agro-climate conditions suitable for the cultivation of onions. The consistently high yields from these states have been instrumental in maintaining India’s position as a leading global onion producer.
