Many pet owners have the desire to travel with their dogs, but they often are confused about the rules. So, are dogs allowed on trains in India? Yes, Indian Railways allows dogs on trains, but only under specific conditions. When you clearly understand the rules the road will be smooth, safe and free of stress for both you and your pet.

Travel Options for Dogs in Indian Railways
Indian Railways is allowing dogs in two ways mainly. You can either carry your dog with you in First AC or First Class or can make your bookings with your dog in the luggage cum brake van. If you want your dog to be with you in the coach inside the coach, you will need to book an entire 2 berth coupe or 4 berth cabin under a single PNR. This rule is to ensure that your pet does not disturb other passengers. Dogs are not given permission to be in AC 2 tier, AC 3 tier, Sleeper Class, Chair Car or General compartments.
Rules for Carrying Dogs Inside the Coach
If you plan to take your dog with you in the cabin, you have to ensure that you bring your dog to the parcel or luggage office at least 3 hours before the train departure. You have to pay necessary luggage charges also. India Railways also demands the certification of fitness from the registered veterinarian that your dog is healthy and is free of little infections, etc. This certificate should be issued on or before 24-48 hours before the journey.
Booking Dogs in the Brake Van
If you do not want to take your dog inside the coach, you can book a dog box in the luggage-cum-brake van. Only one dog is allowed per dog box and the owner should provide food and water for the pet on the journey. You will have to properly chain your dog and have a muzzle on it before giving it over to railway staff. The brake van option is good for dogs which are happy to travel separately.
Rules for Puppies
Indian Railways also allows puppies in baskets in all classes. You have to pay regular luggage charges and you can carry the basket by yourself during the journey. However, it is up to the owner to fully take responsibility for the safety of the puppy.
Online Pet Booking Through IRCTC
If you want to book a dog online then you can use the IRCTC website after making the first chart. The system checks your PNR and permits booking only as the rules match. After the payment is done, you receive an SMS and an email with your pet’s luggage ticket.
Conclusion
Travelling with a dog in India is easy when you follow the rules. With the right planning, your pet can enjoy a safe, comfortable journey with you.
