India’s diverse climate and vast coastline provide the ideal conditions for coconut cultivation. Coconut production supports numerous industries from food to textiles creating employment opportunities and supporting India’s economy. As one of the largest coconut producers in the world, India sees several states at the forefront of this industry, driving growth through innovation and traditional farming practices. However, the top coconut-producing states in India are listed below.
1. Karnataka
Karnataka is the highest producer of coconut in India and it is also one of the largest consumers of coconuts. The key districts that produce coconut in Karnataka are Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada. Tiptur City in Karnataka is a major market for copra coconut. On the other hand, Maddur town of Karnataka is famous for its tender coconut. Coconut production is a major source of income for millions of people in Karnataka. Further, every part of a coconut tree is useful and used in the production of building materials and coir such as ropes, mats, baskets and brooms. Further, copra coconut is used in the extraction of copra oil from the kernel of dried ripe coconuts.
2. Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu is another state in southern India that is the highest producer of coconuts in India. The state is an expert in palm cultivation helping it attain second place in the cultivation of coconuts. In Tamil Nadu, coconut production is concentrated in coastal regions like Kanyakumari, Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli. The excellent climate conditions of the coastal regions are the main reason for the high yield of coconuts in the state. With advanced irrigation methods and government support for coconut farming, the state has achieved a notable improvement in the production of coconuts in the state.
3. Kerala
The next southern state that is the highest producer of coconuts in India is Kerala. Kerala is also the largest consumer of coconuts. It is largely used in making everyday cooking. The coastal region of Kerala with high rainfall and fertile soil has ideal conditions for growing coconuts in large quantities. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kozhikode are the highest producers of coconuts in the state. The production of coconuts in Kerala is used in various other forms like oil, food and beverages.
4. Andhra Pradesh
It doesn’t come as a surprise to see Andhra Pradesh as a top state in the production of coconuts in India. Coconut production is concentrated in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh like districts of East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna. The role of Andhra Pradesh is not limited to the production of coconuts but also a distribution point for the whole country. Andhra Pradesh is also known for its coconut water exports and coir industry. Also, the state’s contribution to the investment of infrastructure and schemes supports the high production of coconuts and expanding coconut plantations. Irrigation schemes of the state have also improved plantation yields and contributed to its production capacity.
5. West Bengal
West Bengal is also blessed with plain and coastal cultivation lands. Coconut plantations in West Bengal are concentrated in South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and East Medinipur. The farmers of the state are facing various challenges in farming activities like cyclones and soil salinity. However coconut farmers of West Bengal have overcome these challenges by adapting to changing climate conditions. Further, the support of government subsidies and technical assistance programs has also contributed to improvement in coconut production in the state.
