India, primarily known as a predominantly vegetarian country, is also a significant producer of meat, serving both its domestic and export markets. Over the years, the demand for meat in India has grown steadily, and several states have developed advanced meat production capabilities. These key states of India that lead meat production are the centre of livestock farming, contributing significantly to the country’s meat production, export industry and overall economy of the country. The contribution by these states ensures the country’s position as one of the leading meat producers in the world. So, here is the list:
1. Maharashtra
Maharashtra is the highest producer of meat in India and it accounts to 12.25 per cent of country’s total output. Maharashtra has a large livestock population and a lot of potential for meat production. It contributes to 13 per cent of poultry meat production in India. The meat sector of the state provides meat and by-products for human consumption and also contributes to the livelihood security of millions of people. With advancements in new technologies, the state has improved meat and poultry processing in the state.
2. Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh (UP) has long been at the forefront of meat production in India, primarily due to its large buffalo population. Buffalo meat is one of India’s significant export products. UP contributes significantly to buffalo meat production and export, primarily serving markets in West Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa. The advanced Slaughterhouses and Processing Units in UP are responsible for enhancing meat quality and adherence to international standards. Many of UP’s meat-processing plants are export-oriented, ensuring that the meat is processed and packaged according to international norms. However, with continuous improvements in livestock management and processing facilities, the state’s outlook remains strong.
3. West Bengal
West Bengal has emerged as a leading meat-producing state, with a particular focus on poultry, goat, and pig meat. The state’s diversified meat production portfolio helps meet the growing demand from its dense population and neighboring states. West Bengal produces a variety of meats, including poultry, goat, and pork. This diversified approach helps meet different market demands and reduces dependency on a single livestock sector. West Bengal faces challenges in improving the processing infrastructure and combating livestock diseases, but with government initiatives focused on modernizing the meat industry, the state is poised to increase its production capacities.
4. Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh has grown into one of India’s largest meat producers, particularly in poultry. The state boasts a highly developed poultry farming sector, contributing to both domestic consumption and export. AP also has a significant production of sheep and goat meat, catering to local and regional markets. Andhra Pradesh is one of the top states in poultry production, with several large-scale poultry farms spread across the region. It’s favourable climate and efficient supply chain management have enabled the state to become a centre for the poultry industry. The state also plays a vital role in exporting meat, with a long coastline and efficient port infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh is well-positioned to export meat products to Southeast Asia and other neighbouring regions.
5. Telangana
Telangana, a relatively new state formed in 2014, has quickly become one of India’s top meat-producing regions. It excels in poultry production, similar to Andhra Pradesh, and is also a major producer of sheep and goat meat. Favourable Climate for Livestock: Telangana’s climate and geography make it ideal for animal husbandry, contributing significantly to its meat production, especially in sheep, goat, and poultry sectors. Government Support and Schemes: The Telangana government has implemented several schemes to encourage animal husbandry and meat production, including subsidies for farmers and incentives for establishing processing units.
