Tamil Nadu is a state in India that is situated in the extreme southern region of the country. It is bordered on the east and south by the Indian Ocean, on the west by the Kerala states, on the northwest by Karnataka (previously Mysore), and on the north by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The enclave of Puducherry & Karaikal, both are part of the Puducherry union territory, are located along the north-central coast of India, enclosed by the state of Tamil Nadu. Chennai (Madras), the state capital, is located on the seashore in the northeastern region of the state.

Tamil Nadu is the name given to the Tamil-speaking region of what was previously known as the Madras State of the British Empire in India. The Tamils are particularly proud of the Dravidian culture and language, and they have been particularly vocal in their opposition to efforts by the government to make Hindi, the only official language of the country.
