Paying Guest (PG) Rules and Regulations in India

Paying Guest is a highly affordable and convenient accommodation option for students and professionals in India. Most youngsters in the country prefer paying guest accommodations over regular hostels. However, there are certain rules and regulations concerning PG in India that need to be followed by the lodgers. Some of them have been mentioned here.

PG Rules and Regulations

Paying Guest (PG)

Identity verification

The PG owners are legally obligated to verify their paying guests’ verification. The renter must produce a copy of their identity document such as Aadhar, PAN, passport, or any other state-issued ID. The landlord can also demand copies of IDs belonging to the parents of the paying Guest and the local guardian, if any.

Payment arrangements

In most major cities in India, paying guests must pay the applicable rent 2-3 months in advance at the outset, along with a refundable security deposit. The regular rent can also be required to be paid in advance. However, payment rules are flexible and vary from one place to another.

Access rules

PGs in India follow No Friends Policy. This means the lodger’s friends are kept from staying overnight. Unmarried males and females are usually not allowed to stay together. Most PGs allow access only to their tenants’ parents, siblings, or local guardians. However, prior permission may be required to enable them to stay overnight.

Curfew rules are followed by most of the PGs in India. It means the residents must return to their rooms by a certain hour in the evening. The timings vary from one PG to another. This arrangement is designed to ensure the safety of the residents.

Food rules

Some PGs may not allow non-vegetarian foods. Depending upon the PG, it can be either an outright ban or a prohibition against cooking non-vegetarian food within the premises but not on food ordered from restaurants.

PGs, by and large in India, do not allow alcohol consumption within the premises. The tenants may consume alcoholic beverages outside the PGs. Violation of this rule can result in expulsion from the PG accommodation.

Cleanliness

Housekeeping services are usually provided to the residents of PGs in India. Laundry facilities are also usually available. However, the residents are also required to maintain cleanliness at their own ends, such as proper waste disposal, maintaining the room in a reasonable state of cleanliness, and more.

A paying guest accommodation can also prohibit residents from displaying photos, posters, and other things on the room’s walls. This rule prevents damage to the walls and preserves the property’s aesthetics. However, many paying guest accommodations provide residents with designated places for personalization.

Prohibition on parties

PGs do not allow their residents to organize parties and other social gatherings. Loud music and general ruckus created by parties and gatherings disturb the neighborhood’s peace and trouble the neighbors. Hence, the PG owners reserve the right to ban such gatherings.

Liabilities

Residents of paying guest accommodations can be held responsible for the damages they cause to the property. They must pay the expenses incurred to repair the damages caused by their actions. This is an essential rule to ensure that the residents share the responsibility of looking after the property.

Notice

If a resident wants to vacate the paying guest accommodation, they must give a notice informing the PG authorities about the same at least a month before leaving. This ensures the process is smooth for both the tenant and the PG management.
