Driving License Telangana – How To Apply, Eligibility, Fees, Status, Search

Transport Department of the Government of Telangana issues driving licenses to citizens of the state to enable them to drive motor vehicles anywhere in the country. Driving license is an essential document and it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle without a valid license. Telangana issues learner’s and permanent driving license.

Age criteria

  • Persons aged 16 years are eligible to obtain driving license for vehicles with engine capacity less than 55 cc. A declaration by the parent/guardian is also required.
  • Persons aged 18 years are eligible to obtain driving license for motor vehicles except transport vehicles.
  • Persons aged 20 years and above are eligible to obtain driving license for transport vehicles.

Learner’s license – Required documents and process

The following documents are required by the applicant to apply for a learner’s license in Telangana.

  • Application form II obtained from the RTO. In case of transport vehicle, application needs to be made in form 8.
  • Residence proof such as ration card, passport, house tax receipt, life insurance policy, electricity or telephone bill or electoral roll.
  • Proof of age such as a birth certificate, school certificate, passport, etc.
  • Medical certificate in form 1A.
  • For transport vehicle, the applicant needs to possess a permanent driving license which is at least 1 year old.
  • 3 recent passport sized photographs of the applicant.

Process – The applicant needs to fill the application form correctly and submit it along with all the required documents at the RTO. The prescribed fee needs to be paid by the applicant. A time slot is given to the applicant to appear for test regarding traffic signs and other rules and regulations for the driver.

The learner’s license is then issued to the applicant. The learner’s license is valid for a period of 6 months from the date of issuance.

Permanent license – Required documents and Process

One can apply for a permanent license within 60-180 days from the date of issuance of the learner’s license. The following documents are required for applying for a permanent license.

  • Application in form 4 obtained from the RTO.
  • Learner’s license for the type of vehicle for which the permanent license is being applied for.
  • In case of transport vehicle, a driving certificate in form 5 issued by a recognised driving school is required.
  • Medical certificate in form 1A.
  • 3 recent passport sized photographs of the applicant.

Process – The applicant is required to submit the duly filled application form along with all the relevant documents at the RTO. Prescribed fee as per Rule 32 of CMV rules needs to be paid by the applicant. A slot for taking the driving test is given to the applicant. The applicant needs to appear for the driving test at RTO on the given date and time. On passing the test, the driving license is sent by post to the registered address of the applicant.
