In the past, when you had to make immediate payment to someone, you used IMPS to make the transaction. The problem with the IMPS was that you had to register the bank account first, and most of the banks used to charge Rs 5 + Taxes for every IMPS transaction. This problem was addressed by India’s indigenous payment portal, UPI. UPI is a Unified Payments Interface, and the National Payments Corporation of India developed it. This made the payments system very user-friendly, and it also helped users receive payments in real-time. Soon, all the banks adopted the infrastructure and enabled UPI for the customers.
