Government of Tamil Nadu had made it mandatory to register on PICME in January 2022. It was an initiative of the RCH (Reproductive and Child Health) scheme. The main objective of registration on PICME is to effectively bring down MMR or maternal mortality ratio.
With this initiative, the government evaluates the health of all those pregnant women who are registered under the scheme. In this article, we will know more about this objective and the process of registration under this scheme.
What is PICME?
PICME stands for “Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation”. This system got developed by the government of Tamil Nadu to keep a track of all pregnant women in the state. Pregnant women need to register on the website https://picme.tn.gov.in/.
The right time to enroll for this scheme is from the time when a woman becomes pregnant till she gets the birth certificate for her newborn. All expectant woman who falls in the age group of fifteen to forty-nine years can register under “PICME” scheme. They are allocated with a twelve-digit number as“RCH ID”. This number is used to monitor all the different pregnancy aspects. The “Public Health Department” is the body held responsible for supervising pregnancy-related aspects.
What is the importance of PICME Registration?
This portal provides a platform to all expectant mothers to get themselves registered online under the PICME scheme through the closest government hospitals and primary health care centers. Expectant mothers can even contact Anganwadi center workers to collect the twelve-digit RCH Id registration code.
When the registration process gets accomplished, all applicants can avail the perks specified under this scheme. Along with this feature, registered expectant mothers will get evaluated by local nurses at the time of the anti-natal stage. Anganwadi nurses can offer assistance by helping expectant mothers to upload the details of their documents on government approved the software.
Registration on PICME makes it quite easier for PICME registered mothers to get a birth certificate. Post-delivery the expectant mother has to provide their allocated RCH ID to obtain the birth certificate for their newborn.
The number of days that takes for the women to get RCH ID number allocated to her depends on the area as well as the availability of Urban Health Nurse and Village Health Nurse. The typical time to get the RCH ID assigned is one month.
What is the need and benefit of Pre-Registration?
To make the registration process under the PICME scheme more convenient, the Tamil Nadu Government has come up with the process of “Pregnancy Pre-Registration”. This process enables expectant women to notify about their pregnancy in several ways.
What are the ways by which Pre-Registration can be done?
There are mainly four ways by which pre-registration under PICME scheme can be performed by expectant mothers.
- Self-registration: It can be performed by the mother by clicking on the link https://picme.tn.gov.in/picme_public. This will open a page wherein the applicant has to enter all the required details. Once the form is duly filled and processed successfully, an acknowledgment with a “pre-registration id”is generated.
- Via Government Hospitals: Expectant women who do not have access to the internet, can choose this method to register for the PICME scheme. Here the pregnant mother has to visit the closest government hospital and perform the pre-registration process.
Once the process of pre-registration gets completed successfully, the applicant will receive an acknowledgment of their application via an SMS. This SMS is sent by the concerned authority to the mobile number provided by the applicant at the time of the registration.
The details regarding pre-registration of the mother will get forwarded to the respective Village Health Nurse or Urban Health Nurse.
Receiving the details, they will intimate the same to the applicant and register her. Upon successful completion of the PICME registration process, an RCH ID number will be allotted to the applicant.
On clicking on the link https://picme.tn.gov.in/picme_public, an applicant can check the status of their application. If the application has got registered by urban health nurse or village health nurse, then this page will show the RCH ID of the applicant.
