IRCTC Rail Insurance: New Rules, Guidelines, Eligibility, How To Claim

Travel Insurance can be of great help in mitigating the risk that is associated with the travel. This is especially useful in case of a rail journey. Not that you are going to meet an accident or something but this protects your prom the potential loss that you may suffer because of lost luggage or something else. In case of the air travel, the insurance is offered for Rs 249 which is quite high and hence a lot of us do not purchase the insurance during the air travel.

In a recent announcement, the government of India announced that the Rail Insurance can be available at less than a Rupee. Now, this is something that might interest you as you can insure your trip by spending less than Re 1. So, here in this article, we have listed all the information about the railway insurance offered by the government.

What is covered by the Rail Insurance?

The coverage amount offered by this insurance is Rs 10 Lakh and this covers the loss that you might incur because of a railway accident, robber or any such incident. The premium of the insurance is very low and it is set at Rs 0.68 or 68 Paisa. This low premium is to encourage a lot of people to get the insurance for themselves.

This covers death or disability that may arise because of the accident. In case of death or permanent total disability due to rail accident, the beneficiary gets Rs 10 Lakh. In case of permanent partial disability, the beneficiary will be compensated with Rs 7.5 lakh and in case of an injury, the insurance will also cover the cost of hospitalization. This cost is capped at Rs 2 lakh per passenger.

How can I Avail this Insurance? Wasn’t that free?

You might remember when IRCTC used to offer free insurance to the people as they booked the ticket. This rule has been changed recently and now you have to pay a premium to get the rail insurance. The new rule is applicable since 1st September 2018 and under the rule, you can choose the insurance during the ticket booking process.

While booking the ticket, you will now have to select the relevant option to purchase the travel insurance at 68 paise per passenger. The amount isn’t much and hence it is really advisable to purchase the insurance without a second thought.

Is there any Eligibility Criteria?

The eligibility criteria are that you must be an Indian citizen to avail this insurance. The scheme is not applicable for the children below the age of 5 years and the people of foreign nationality.

How to make a Claim?

This insurance is offered by three different companies. These companies include ICICI Lombard, Royal Sundaram and Shriram General Insurance. IRCTC is just a middle agent here who facilitates the process of providing you with insurance. Hence, the claims should be routed to these companies with help of the policy documents. These policy documents are sent to your registered email address during the time of booking the ticket.

You can submit the details of nomination on the company’s website or else the beneficiary is the legal heir of the insured person.

This was all about the railway insurance offered by IRCTC and now you can take precaution while booking the ticket. Ensure that you are purchasing the insurance and you do not miss out on selecting the option required to buy the insurance. Once that is done, do check the email for the policy documents. In case of any doubt, you can contact IRCTC.
